New Romantic Wedding Ideas You’ll Fall For

Our ‘Midnight in Marbella’ trend was inspired by rustic villas on the rocky coast of Spain. With unforgettable details around every corner, this trend has a flair for the dramatic. Candlelight and deep reds bring a passionate note to the sweetest day. Turn romantic wedding style on its head with moody twists that will have you savoring every moment. Pour a healthy glass of Rioja and escape to Marbella for the rest of these dreamy tips!

1. Set the Tone with An Intimate Venue

Did you know “Location, location, location!” also applies to wedding planning? While venue searching, look at venues that feel that your own personal palace. Rustic touches, like exposed brick and worn stone bring texture and intrigue to a space. Some locations to consider include villas, estates, crumbling castles or even gardens. Balconies and ivy-covered walls are always a plus. Award extra points for settings with both indoor and outdoor space — it’s a great way to offer some variety for your guests. The bottom line: If you feel like a star-crossed lover when you enter the venue, you know you’re on the right track.

2. Get Inspired by Fine Art

When it comes to wedding style inspiration, you can really get ideas from anywhere! The perfect place to start planning a romantic wedding vibe is with fine art. Classical paintings have a lot to offer here — their extraordinary detail and depth lends well to the moody, decorative style of this trend. There is so much movement and expression to be inspired by with paintings of florals, draped fabrics, dancers and more!

Wondering how you can bring this into your wedding day? Paintings are a great jumping off point for creating color palettes. Just ask your stylist for help with swatching! You can also use bits and pieces of paintings in your website, invites, programs or menus. Maybe you even emulate a gorgeous still life in your table settings.

More literally, a framed canvas or patterned wallpaper makes a great backdrop to any gift table. Better yet, have your guests sign a painted canvas and frame it as your artistic guest book!

3. Send Out Calligraphic Invitations

There’s something so personal and sweet about a handwritten invitation. Throw in a script-y font, and you’ll be transported to the days of Jane Austen. The most luxurious option is to hire a calligrapher to write the addresses for your invitations. You can even find ones who will write in different styles and with added graphics. If a calligrapher isn’t in the budget, there are plenty of digital invitation suites that feature printed calligraphy.  If you’re feeling super crafty, a pen-ink drawing of your venue adds another personal touch. We’re loving these gold-dipped invites with just a touch of watercolor.

3. Enjoy Dinner Alfresco

Dining alfresco means eating outside and we are here for it! If the weather is nice, inviting your guests for a night under the stars is an utterly unforgettable experience. Rectangular tables work great for an outdoor reception because they can frame the area and connect everyone. A rustic cheesecloth table runner will add texture, and long taper candles bring the drama. We love how this table setting is styled with vintage mismatched chairs. By keeping the color palette similar, the look is whimsical and detailed without feeling disjointed.

4. Mix and Match with Moody Reds

If you haven’t noticed by now, our motto for this trend is “More is more!” Layer wisely with mismatched bridesmaid dresses in shades of burgundy, pink and peach. The mix is an unexpected, but refreshing, take on mixing red and blush bridesmaid dresses.

Add even more by playing with textures! Velvet is a no-fail option for the bride who wants to spice it up with a luxe fabric. You can also throw in some print and lace with these fun floral bridesmaid dresses from Jenny Yoo that tie it all together. Combined, these dresses make for a truly special and unique wedding look. We love that it also lets your bridesmaids’ personal styles peak through; this look celebrates variety and individuality! Pro tip: Keep the cohesion by sticking to certain colors or shades of the same color. (We used tints of red).

6. Step Out in Lace Appliqué

In keeping with our theme, bridal gowns with lots of dimension and texture are ideal choices. Explore romantic wedding dresses with appliqué sewn on top of lace and tulle that feel like a fairytale come to life. To avoid going too saccharine, look for plunging necklines and illusion mesh. These daring details bring a sultry vibe to your wedding day look and we are here for it! Flowy silhouettes offer all the drama and movement, so opt for a-lines or ballgowns you can twirl in all night.

Two romantic wedding dresses we love:

  • Ellera Marta: Pictured on the left, Ellera Marta is a strapless sweetheart neckline (Ask for Ellera Marion if you prefer straps!) with a sheer appliqué lace skirt that has just a touch of sparkle.
  • Jenny by Jenny Yoo Rosamund: Pictured right, The Rosamund ballgown has a plunging illusion v-neck combined with an airy organza circle skirt. The bodice is decorated in beaded lace that creates a beautiful 3D texture.

Bring the Drama with Lavish Florals

Escape the traditional and opt for floral arrangements that are a little bit wild! Red spray roses are you best friend, especially when paired with white dahlias, dutch roses and peach ranunculus! Be sure to add plenty of greenery like dusty miller, ivy, eucalyptus, and even twigs for texture. Throw in a few pops of bright hypericum berry to pull it all together! If you can, decorate your space generously with garden-style urns, hanging florals and garlands on entryways.

Don’t have it in the budget to go all out on flowers? You can still get the look! Focus on a few, vibrant florals and use lots of greenery as filler. Ask your florist about doing nosegay-sized arrangements for your bridesmaids. They are smaller than the typical bouquet, but they’ll still resemble yours in color and shape. Another fun (and inexpensive) way to jazz up your florals is with ribbon. Long ribbons in a dramatic shade of red or plum can really add a lot. Plus, they look beautiful flowing in the wind!

8. Accessorize to Your Heart’s Desire

Your bridal accessories are the last step to bringing your personal style to your wedding day outfit. Brideside has tons of beautiful veils, belts and jewelry to complete your look from designers like Untamed Petals and Amsale! With many floral and beaded designs, it’s easy to take your look to the next level.

A veil adorned in appliqué or pearl is a really special detail that fits well with a romantic vibe. If you don’t like the idea of having something over your face, simply clip your veil into the crown of your head and let it flow behind you! Other accessories that work well are leaf and vine designs in silver or gold accented in opal or diamond. The subtle sparkle is a perfect touch.

Our top romantic accessories:

  • The Ojai Veil (left) is a best-seller for a reason! Intricate floral embroidery laden with crystals line the edges of the veil to frame you and your beautiful wedding dress beautifully.
  • The Tatum earrings stop us in our tracks every time! These feminine statement earrings shine with opal crystals and delicate leaves. Find them in gold, silver or rose gold.

9. Get Cozy by the Candlelight

A ‘Midnight in Marbella’ theme is all about mood lighting. Get yours by keeping it dim and warm with candles. There are tons of different candle types available, and a combination of all of them works great too. Floating candles are a beautiful choice for centerpieces where guests can see the details up close. Taper candles, pillar candles and votives come in a variety of shapes and sizes, which makes them ideal for creating multi-level displays. If you have a featured staircase or mantle, add some votives around the edges! It’s a beautiful way to provide some flickering light and set the scene at the same time.
